Dr. Asher grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut and attended the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst, majoring in Pre-Veterinarian
studies. At UMASS, he joined and became an officer of the Pre-Veterinarian
Animal Science Club. An important function of this club was to schedule
guest speakers so that interested students were introduced to the
veterinarian field. While at UMASS, Dr. Asher was very involved in another
registered student organization,
The Outing Club. His participation in this club, helped him experience
many new activities as well as lead many large group hiking, camping,
canoeing and caving trips. During that time he earned certification in
Wilderness First Aid Responder. He was also a co-creator and organizer
for the Connecticut River Challenge which involved a six member team
canoeing down the entire Connecticut River from Canada to the Long Island
sound, totaling over 368 miles of river in just 3 days. This challenge
started with only a hand full of participants and to this day it has grown
to more than 30 participants, with sponsorships.
After graduation, Dr. Asher spent the
next year working locally and had the great opportunity to travel through
Europe. Upon his return, Dr. Asher was accepted to
Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine , St. Kitts, West Indies
and spent the next two and a half years attending school. There, he found
his best friend Kane, a male Kittician mix breed dog, which he brought back
to the States. Kane has been his trusted friend in all new experiences..
After St. Kitts, Dr. Asher moved to St. Paul, MN to attend the
University of Minnesota College of Veterinarian Medicine to complete his
veterinarian program.
Dr. Asher graduated from Ross University
with a DVM degree in October, 2004 and headed back to Norwalk, Connecticut.
January, 2005, Dr. Asher joined a well-established multi-doctor practice in
the Brooklyn, New York area. In February 2007, Dr. Asher joined the staff
of the Animal Wellness Center of East Hartford, as Chief of Staff. At that
time, AWC of East Hartford was corporate owned by Healthy Pet
Corporation. As of June, 2007 Healthy Pet was purchased by
VCA Animal Hospital Corporation and became the new Medical Director of
the hospital. Since the acquisition, the hospital changed its name to VCA
Animal Hospital of East Hartford.
Dr. Asher currently lives in Vernon, CT with
his two “rescued” dogs. Joining Kane is Sugar, a puppy from Louisiana. In
his leisure time he enjoys hiking, spelunking and renovating his home.
